Mission Statement

The mission of the College of Sciences is to advance science through excellence in teaching, research and service and to support the educational, economic and technological development of the New Orleans metropolitan area and state of Louisiana. Through its seven departments, the College offers baccalaureate degrees in the natural, physical, and computational sciences as well as masters’ and Ph.D. programs in several of these areas. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, graduate and qualified undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in research experiences in the basic and applied sciences.

The College adheres to the philosophy that the scholarly activities of faculty are necessary for continued professional growth as well as for providing quality instruction. Accordingly, the College places a high premium on the acquisition and dissemination of new knowledge and the application of this knowledge through professional and public service. Faculty actively pursue extramural funding for support of their research programs, and the College has established institutes to promote research efforts.

The College contributes significantly to the general education mission of the University. Its departments provide numerous service courses for students in other colleges. Additionally, faculty interact with, and provide expertise to, local schools and businesses thus advancing the educational and economic well-being of the New Orleans metropolitan area. To enhance students’ learning opportunities, the College supports a Mathematics Tutor Center and several computer laboratories.

The College of Sciences aggressively pursues recruitment strategies that will ensure a diverse student body, faculty and staff. The College also actively promotes an environment that advances the values of gender, ethnic and age diversity.
