College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP) In a pilot program for the spring semester 2010, we will begin this program to engage freshman and sophomores in research. There are many reasons why we are initiating this program with funding from the College for student wages and laboratory supplies for faculty. First, we want to engage students at an early point in their stay here at UNO, because it will enrich their experience here with the hope that it increases our retention of undergraduates and the quality of their undergraduate experience. Second, I would like to increase the interaction between undergraduates and our faculty/graduate students. Close mentoring of these students by both graduate students and faculty in a research setting enriches the academic experience for all parties. Finally, through social activities and group educational opportunities, we hope to build important lasting bonds between our students and faculty. While the initial program will probably be limited to approximately 15-20 students, we hope to expand this program through fund raising activities, seeking foundation and/or federal agency support, and matching support from the University. We also hope that departments can offer undergraduate research credit for students participating in this program.
