Description:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest degree offered by the university. It is conferred only for work of distinction in which the student displays power of original scholarship and only in recognition of achievement and marked ability.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering and Applied Science is an interdisciplinary, integrative degree involving faculty from the College of Sciences and the College of Engineering. Subject matter is from a collection of academic departments from both colleges.

The degree is not awarded solely on the basis of study, however faithful, extending over any prescribed period of time. The basic requirements are twofold:

  1. A candidate must exhibit unmistakable evidence of penetrating mastery of a rather broad major field, which is ordinarily done in a general examination.

  2. A candidate must prove ability to complete a significant program of original research, which is done in a dissertation embodying creative scholarship by passing a rigorous final examination. The dissertation must add to the sum of existing knowledge, and it must be presented with literary skill.

The degree must be completed within 13 years of passing the qualifying examination.
